—Swinging at Windmills-
Sandie and I recently had the privilege of spending a week in Alcala, Spain. This may not ring many bells for a lot of people; however, it was the home of Miguel de Cervantes. The classic Don Quixote was written by this man and has endeared itself to countless numbers of people across the world and through the centuries.
The gallantry and nobleness of Quixote (although misguided and quirky) stand out, his attacking the windmills and, of course, his friendship with his faithful sidekick are features of the story.
For me the saddest part of the story is the attack on the windmills. All the nobleness, gallantry, and heroism were wasted on a non-existent enemy.
Fast forward with me to the present day and to reality. We spent an evening in Madrid with a group of dedicated missionaries, missionary children, and Spanish believers on the Plaza de Sol - the very heart of Madrid and a place that is the Kilometer Zero of measuring distances in Spain. Sandie and I were with noble, gallant, and heroic people. These “heroes” shared their passion for Jesus with dozens of people in the very center of Madrid. Literally thousands and thousands of people stroll this plaza in the evenings during this time of year.
For hours the gospel was preached from on top of a crate (remember the old soap box preachers) in song and in individual testimonies. Hundreds heard about the true meaning of Christmas - Jesus, the only Son of God, born of a virgin—the Savior of the world.
These dear noble, gallant, and heroic friends are not swinging at windmills—they are not writing a story—they are relating the greatest story ever told.
We trust that the Christmas story is more than a myth in your household - it is the story of human history - God became flesh and dwelt with men. May the Christ of Christmas be your peace this holiday season.
Sincerely,
Greg Mundis
