That’s For The Birds

Dear Friends:

In 1978 my wife and I made application with Assemblies of God World Missions to go overseas and serve the Lord in Austria. At that time there was a moratorium on sending new personnel there, which we did not know. After explaining this to us, the missions’ leadership asked us to consider serving in the Canary Islands. We had never even heard about a group of islands about 70 miles off the coast of Africa that belonged to Spain. There was no stirring in our hearts and we literally said, “That’s for the birds.”

Fast forward to December 2008—30 years later—just a few short days ago I returned from a week of ministry in the Canary Islands. I was on the island of Fuerteventura—a very arid place. However, the people of the church and conference were not dry at all. There was a warm and grateful reception of the Word of God. The worship was exciting, and the atmosphere was charged with expectancy. 

One service stands out above the other for me. It was Saturday afternoon, and the emphasis was missions. I shared about what the Lord is doing in the world and, in particular, Europe. We talked about the awakening in the Netherlands, in Romania, in Spain, and in Italy. We then talked about how the Lord is using technology to share the gospel to difficult access peoples. We challenged the young people under 25 to be missionaries, pastors, Christian leaders, doctors, lawyers, and business people that are sold out to God and who can use the technology of today and tomorrow to share their faith in the Canaries but also across the world.

My heart was very moved when between 100 and 130 young people came forward to offer themselves as a living sacrifice for God’s Divine purpose in their lives. They prayed and sought God for His will in their lives. It was powerful.

This was a great 2008 pre-Christmas gift. This is one gift that I shall not soon forget and one that is definitely not “for the birds.” I give thanks to the Lord for getting me to the Canary Islands to witness His work.

“Lord, send these young people out into the harvest fields of the Canaries, Europe, and the world.  Amen!”
